‘The City of Derby Girls’ Choir’
- Passionate about singing? Age 13 upwards?
- Want to work to top quality performance level?
- Make great music , make great friends! Then audition for ‘Voices’!
Voices has its own home – Voices Hall at VoiceBox in the town centre. We sing a huge variety of songs – madrigals to musicals, sacred and secular, jazz and pop, old music, new music. We have singers from lots of different schools and several different counties.
Voices was 20 years old in 2015, and we’ve said happy hellos and sad goodbyes to hundreds of girls. From time to time, ex-members of Voices meet and perform as a chamber choir ‘Sequenza’, who performed alongside Voices in a special celebration concert at St Mary’s Church, Derby, on 16th May 2015. The concert also featured some Voices alumni who have gone on to Conservatoire studies and into the singing profession.
Singers have some great opportunities: concerts in superb UK venues; singing solos; singing in smaller chamber groups; singing with VoiceMale in ChorAlchemy; making CDs; singing in competitions; world premieres of new choral works – and that’s all happened recently! But perhaps the best opportunity of all is going abroad on our annual choir concert tour. The list of venues which have welcomed ‘The City of Derby Girls’ Choir’ reads like a list of Europe’s finest: Notre Dame and La Madeleine in Paris, St Mark’s in Venice, the Duomo in Florence, Barcelona Cathedral, Salzburg Cathedral, Cologne Cathedral, the Berliner Dom and the Thomaskirche in Leipzig where Bach was master of the music. August 2011 saw Voices and ChorAlchemy performing in Canterbury Cathedral, Bruges, Gent, Paris, Rouen and at the Menin Gate ceremony. In 2012, we continued with the Northern Europe theme, performing in Brussels Cathedral, Cologne Cathedral and other Rhineland churches. The choir’s contribution to the Menin Gate ceremony in 2011 was so valued that we were requested to return: and we responded to that invitation on the way to Germany in 2012.
In August 2013 we visited the beautiful city of Prague with ChorAlchemy, performing three fantastic concerts and having a great time exploring the city and its surrounding area. Concert venues included St Nicholas Church and Tyn Church, both in the Old Town Square, and to very large appreciative audiences. In August 2014, Voices travelled to York for concerts at Holy Trinity Church, Goodramgate, and the Chapter House at York Minster. The choir were delighted that the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, took time out of his week-long Vigil for Peace to listen to the concert and talk to the choir after.
In 2015 Voices once again travelled to Italy, performing in Siena, Florence and Montecatini. In 2016 they enjoyed their first tour to Malta, and in 2017 had a fantastic first tour to Budapest. 2018 sees Voices returning to sing in Belgium / Flanders – this time along with ChorAlchemy and Derby City Singers – to honour the end of World War 1.
Voices perform regularly at the VoiceBox and around Derby, for more details of their upcoming concerts please see the Concert and Events pages.
